The surreal and satirical porcelain sculptures with social criticism by Penny Byrne

From Australia, the sharp eyes of artist Penny Byrne don't stop to perceive and look the world around, with a critical opinion about what is happening. Using her art as expression, she creates sculptures with porcelain figurines and other toy dolls, with a twist of the way we generally see them. The result are figures sometimes surreal, sometimes satirical, but always with a position about society's aspects that deserve some attention.

Sometimes with a funny criticism to the cult of beauty and its sacrifices that transforms women in just body parts, sometimes with figures that make ironies of international politics and wars, or even with the russian position about liberty of speech of homossexuals, Penny Byrne's sculptures are always provocative and challenging.

The sculptures made with plastic trash bags by Khalil Chishtee

Khalil Chishtee is an artist from Pakistan who shares her time between her homeland and New York. As artists, she uses a curious material to create her sculptures: plastic bags. Those plastic trash bags that virtually everyone uses.

Using black and white plastic trash bags, Khalil Chishtee creates life-sized figures who seem to be melting, deteriorating, being in ruins. This is very interesting and kind of symbolic, in at least two ways. First, the visual of deteriorating and decaying figures resembles our idea of trash, garbage. Second, there is this irony of creating melting and deteriorating objects using plastic, a material known for lasting years in nature, polluting and creating damage in nature.

Plants and flowers arranged as human body organs by Camila Sitarama Carlow

Camila Sitarama Carlow was born in Guatemala, but resides in England. She is an artist who works with a wide range of mediums, from fine art painting and photography, and as a cinematographer for video production. One of her latest and most known work is her serie Eye Heart Spleen. In this project, Carlow arranges plants and flowers on the shapes of human body organs, as heart, kidneys, lungs, eye, etc.

Made with plants forraged in the city of Bristol, England, this serie of photographies is a celebration of nature. The nature inside us and the nature around us. The artist says:

The most fascinating and intricate of biological structures, yet we rarely pay heed to the organs inside our body. Regardless of whether we fill ourselves with toxins or nourishing food, whether we exercise or not - our organs sustain us, working away effortlessly and unnoticed.

In a similar way, plants flourishing in the urban environment are a testament to nature’s indifference to our goings on. They grow out of the sides of buildings, in brick walls and between the cracks in concrete, despite of the traffic and pollution.
