The beautiful and touching photography of elderly animals by Isa Leshko

We can say that the life of Isa Leshko, an american photographer, has been full of diverses experiences. She graduated in 93, in Experimental Psychology with a minor in Gender Studies. Then, she worked during 10 years in the Internet industry as a project manager, software engineer and management consultant. During this period, she also completed her post-baccalaureate studies in Computer Science. Then, in 2003, she discovered her true passion: the photography. Since then, she has been published in several vehicles of media and her prints are part of several collections, both public and private.

In her series "Elderly Animals", Isa Leshko traveled to sanctuaries across the USA to photograph animals who are elderly or at the end stage of their lives. The result are touching and heartbreaking images, where old animals look tired and defeated, with melancholic eyes. About her process, Isa says:

"In order to achieve a sense of intimacy in these portraits, I spend several hours with the animals I photograph and I try to visit them multiple times. Depending on the animal, I may spend an hour or so simply lying on the ground next to the creature before I take a single image. This approach helps the animal acclimate to my presence and it allows me to observe the animal without being focused on picture taking."

This series, with its touching images, also makes us wonder about our own aging. It began after the Isa to spent one year helping her sister to take care of their mother, who has Alzheimer. This experience had a profound impact and forced the artist to confront her own mortality:

"I am creating these photographs in order to take an unflinching look at aging and mortality. My maternal grandmother had dementia during her later years, and now my mom has it. I am scared of developing Alzheimer’s disease and I get nervous whenever I lose my keys or forget a person’s name. Photographing geriatric animals enables me to immerse myself in my fear of growing old. I have come to realize that these images are self-portraits. Or at the very least, they are manifestations of my fears and hopes about what I will be like when I am old."

The beautiful and surreal photography of city lights at night by Satoki Nagata

Satoki Nagata is a photographer born and raised in Japan, but now living in Chicago. With a PhD in Neuroscience, the photography became his passion since he moved to USA. Taking his pictures always in black and white, he began his photography career taking pictures of people in Chicago's streets.

Among his recent projects, there are some series of photos taken at night, in cold weather, in the streets of big cities like Chicago and Paris. Nagata's photos are created with several layers, making the people portrayed there to look like translucid shadows or silhouettes, a beautiful effect created putting the flash pointing to the camera and placing the subject between these, using a slow shutter speed.

The result, that Satoki Nagata shows in his series Lights in Paris and Ligths in Chicago, are intimate photos that makes the people to look like apparitions or entities among the nocturnal cold city lights, something that makes me feel nostalgic and a little bit melancholic, looking a beautiful moment captured and frozen in time.

The amazing, dark and gothic illustrations by DZO Olivier

DZO Olivier is an artist and graphic designer graduated at School of Fine Arts in Toulouse. He follows a more tradicional process, creating his works with pencils and pens (sometimes, using only his pens, in exercises of creativity, when each line and trace is final and each "error" is just an opportunity for a new idea). Sometimes, he uses computers for colorization.

Mixing styles and techniques, Olivier's artwors of this post, which are part of his personal portfolio, are dark and gothic, only in black and white, only paper and pen's ink.
